Known locally as "The Psychic" (complete with capital 'T' and 'P' to match his showman persona), Cain is the sole owner of The Hourglass, a small shop located in Marrow that is chock full of mystic and magic wares-- and his personal psychic services. Unbeknownst to the general public, however, his act as a psychic is just that: an act. He has not a single iota of psychic power; everything he passes off as psychic abilities is either smoke and mirrors, observation, sleight of hand, misdirection, cold & hot reading, or just plain theatrics.

Backstory


Cain has been living in Marrow for about a decade now, having hailed from... well, somewhere else. He doesn't really talk much about where he's from, his family, or his past prior to showing up in Marrow, but word around town is he's let a few tidbits slip after a couple drinks: he allegedly mentioned that he "learned his trade from his parents" but had to "move to a city to find any success in it", apparently adding that he sends the majority of his money back to his family for reasons yet unspecified.

 

Unbeknownst to anyone in Marrow, 'Cain' is not his real name. If you wanted to find out what his real name actually is... well, you'd have one hell of a time coaxing that out of him; Cain is incredibly guarded with that information.

 

Along the way, even prior to arriving in Marrow, Cain acquired a steep debt to an impatient and unforgiving debtor. While it seems that he owes money, he's never actually stated that money was what he owed-- only that whatever it is was "too much". Trying to get more information out of him about it is nigh impossible. It's likely that revealing too much would incur the ire of this already ruthless debtor. What is clear, however, is that he's been set up to fail: the interest climbs ever higher, and it looks as though Cain will be in debt for the rest of his (self-proclaimed "short") life.

✦ The Façade

Ever the showman, Cain is exceedingly charming and personable, able to gracefully maneuver his way through conversations with even the toughest of personalities. He has the ability to entertain, coerce, and convince most to whatever it is he may be trying to peddle (or glean) at the moment, all of which comes quite in handy as a salesman. Keenly observant while also empathetic, Cain is able to combine both traits to understand how others may think or feel, using that sense to manipulate situations toward the outcomes he desires; both traits also help him with his "psychic" services (which is to say, as a professional liar). Confident, charismatic, congenial; Cain is either well-liked or detested, there is rarely any middling indifference to how others feel about him.

✧ Under The Façade

Rather surprisingly, Cain is actually reserved and quiet deep down, not at all a showman by nature. For reasons he has not yet revealed, before moving to Marrow, he forced himself outside of his comfort zone and learned how to play the role of the entertainer. While the extroverted charm is manufactured, his keen senses of observation and empathy are true to his core, leaving him frequently laden with a deep guilt due to lying being part of his current livelihood. As such, even while Cain is still technically lying for certain psychic services (such as séances, for example), his end goal is still to help his clients, and will therefore do every ounce of research he can in preparation and suss out what is the best possible thing (in his opinion) for his client to hear. In a way, he's a bit of an unintentional life coach-- just with a lot of theatrics thrown in. Hidden under that extroverted façade, Cain is simply a lonely depressed man who feels trapped in his circumstance.

Charming as all hell, Cain can be very suave and smooth when socializing-- and he has a knack for making it convincingly genuine under normal circumstances. Despite his secret financial hardship, Cain takes pride in his appearance and tries to look good regardless of his circumstances. A good example of this is in the one nice outfit he owns: unable to afford any additional expensive outfits or to have the one he has repaired by a professional, Cain has learned to repair and tailor it himself as needed. Not too overblown, he has a healthy amount of vanity. Dress the part and fake it 'til you make it, he tells himself.

   ✧ Customers and Threats

No rancid skeezy car salesman vibes here; even when he is trying to sell a product or an act, Cain holds having satisfied customers in high priority. In fact, should any typical client walk away feeling unsatisfied with a psychic service from him, he will unquestionably issue a refund. There are exceptions to this, however. While thankfully not common, any client that Cain can discern is (or recognizes as) up to no good, a deplorable person, or otherwise someone he distinctly dislikes, will not be issued any refunds-- and Cain is not above being smug about it, should the client be an especially deserving piece of work. This, of course, doesn't always work out so well for him, sometimes leading into the client becoming heated (or worse). In the face of a threat, Cain will always attempt to charm, outwit, or simply talk his way out of the situation. Should those methods fail and a physical altercation occurs, he will try to use his agility and dexterity to attempt an escape rather than fight back as he is painfully aware that he has very little in the way of strength or fighting skills.

   ✧ Inside Looking Out

Despite it seeming like Cain loves to socialize, he genuinely finds it exhausting and often sticks to himself when he doesn't have to interact with others. It's a complicated issue, mainly due to how draining it is to constantly keep up the act. An introvert pretending to be an extrovert is strenuous. It isn't helped by his guilt and self-loathing either, causing him to believe he doesn't deserve any sort of happiness via relationships. There's also a practical reason: the longer he's around someone, the higher the chance increases that his secret could be discovered. The complication really becomes obvious in the fact that Cain is also lonely and dislikes being so alone, even if it's of his own doing.

   ✧ Friendships and Romance

Relationships are a thing Cain typically has tried to avoid for various reasons, some of which have been already mentioned. While there are others he considers his friends, he still tends to keep his distance, even from them. When it comes to romance, however, Cain has never had any romantic partner, ever. Just as with platonic relationships, he doesn't believe he deserves that happiness-- let alone thinking he'd just end up accidentally ruining that person's life. This doesn't mean he can't end up with a romantic partner eventually, though. While it wouldn't be easy, someone could get him to push past his fears and allow himself to fall in love.

With that in mind, it should be noted that while Cain can flirt expertly, it is usually entirely manufactured and not at all genuine.

   ✧ How To Instantly Break His Act

All of that being said, if someone wanted to instantly and undeniably destroy his façade, there is not a more surefire way to ensure that than to make the flirting become more real, aka: getting physically intimate with him, showing genuine love and desire to form a romantic relationship with him, etc. Taking it beyond simply flirting will cause Cain to suddenly become nervous and nonplussed, rendering him unable to hold up his flirtatious act (or any act at all) convincingly. He'll then try his best to talk his way out of whatever the flirting is turning into or find an escape as subtly as he can-- either way, it'll be a struggle for him to hide the sudden anxiety and fear, but he'll certainly try.

The Hourglass


Cain's shop of mystic wares-- and where he provides his psychic services-- is called The Hourglass. It is a small hole-in-the-wall located deep within the city of Marrow.

With a large catalog of inventory coming from a wide array of ethical sources, he has quite a lot to offer. Whether or not everything in his stock actually works as intended (or at all), however, is a bit of a mystery; most of the time, the only way to find out the efficacy of an item from The Hourglass is to purchase and try it.

As for the offered psychic services, most are walk-in welcome-- with the hard exception of Mediumship.

✦ Deduction

Being inherently keenly observant, Cain's greatest strength comes in the form of his deductive skills. He is very perceptive, able to pick up on details and clues around him that the average person would completely overlook or disregard. Reason, intuition, and logic are his tools of instinct. All of this combined with his sense of empathy gives Cain an almost inhuman ability to accurately read and understand others-- something that plays directly into his fake psychic charade. He can pick up on nearly imperceptible tells and micro-expressions, allowing him to deduce his way through cold reading others; ironically, this also makes him quite good at detecting lies and deception.

✦ Charm

For all intents and purposes, charm almost rivals deduction for Cain's maxed out skill, falling short due to being a learned trait rather than one that came naturally. This isn't to say Cain isn't a charming person under the act, but it certainly isn't the same as the sharpened persuasive silver-tongued ability he taught himself over many years. Using charm, he is able to entertain, tap into humor and quick wit, make snap judgments, exude trustworthiness, persuade (and manipulate, if the ends justify the means), lie convincingly, and typically win most people over-- the exceptions being individuals that distinctly dislike him, find his type of personality irritating, or can somehow perceive that it is an act. His charm is a key factor in his ability to ascertain desirable information from around Thraelos.

✦ Sleight of Hand

Like one might expect, Cain's sleight of hand skill involves quick, clever, and dexterous movements of his hands utilized namely to deceive spectators and/or manipulate objects. This is an ability he has honed for many years, making him slick and very adept with using it in various situations. His card tricks and illusions benefit substantially from this ability, making them seem like legitimate magic to all but the most acutely perspicacious (who know what to look for). Other uses for sleight of hand include misdirection, lock-picking (his hair stick is multi-purpose in that regard), stealing/pickpocketing (though he'd only ever do either if it was a justifiable means to an end, never just for himself), cheating (especially in card games), theatrics (particularly with 'psychic acts'), and entertainment.

Job & Skills


Outside of running his shop, the main occupation and skillset that most others associate with Cain is that of a working psychic. In addition to the services he offers normally, his ability as a psychic has also been called upon from time to time by authorities, such as a consultant in missing persons cases or in helping solve particularly stumping mysteries.

Truthfully, however, Cain's status as a working psychic is secretly a complete farce. Cain actually doesn't have any powers at all whatsoever; he is not a real psychic.

The success Cain finds under the guise of being a psychic is actually achieved through deduction, research, intuition, and theatrics. For example: when the authorities believe they are hiring a consulting psychic, they are actually hiring a highly intuitive detective pretending to make discoveries through use of psychic abilities. When Cain is able to make [seemingly] very specific and accurate readings, it is actually through use of subtle cognitive tricks such as Barnum statements, reading tells and micro-expressions, prior secret research, etc. When paranormal events seem to occur during a séance Cain is conducting, it is actually due to hidden smoke-and-mirror tricks and rigging he'd already have set up in preparation. Many magical items in his inventory can often lend him a hand as well.

All in all, while Cain is absolutely not a real psychic, he still tries to (and typically manages to) get the results he is hired for-- it's all simply presented under the guise of having been gained through psychic methods.

  • Misdirection
    • The art of subtle deceptive directing of an audience’s attention towards one thing (a magical effect) so they do not notice another (the method or mechanics of a trick)

    • A performing art in which 1) the practitioner appears to demonstrate highly developed mental or intuitive abilities, and 2) includes special effects that may appear to employ psychic or supernatural forces, but that are actually achieved by "ordinary conjuring means", natural human abilities (i.e. reading body language, refined intuition, subliminal communication, emotional intelligence), and an in-depth understanding of key principles from human psychology or other behavioral sciences

Important note: For the most part (which is to say, when the client isn't someone he actively dislikes and feels is horrible), if Cain intuits potential problems the client may be facing during any of his psychic services, he will try his best to subtly suggest help through the psychic act, be it advice for the issues at hand, his opinion on a decision, encouragement, guidance, or even just what he thinks they want to hear if it'll help them to make it through another day, etc.

With a sharp thwip, the nature of the last tarot card was revealed.

“Hm, The Tower…” A beat followed by a long inhale, “There's no gentle way for me to infer this, so please forgive my bluntness: The current path of your financial future is careening towards complete and utter ruin.”
 
The client sitting across from him gasped softly, shaking their head in resignation. Their downtrodden expression told him that they had silently expected that answer all along.
 
“But,” Cain started again, gloved finger sliding over to tap The Chariot card pulled earlier, “You have the chance, the choice, right now to change that. After all, it’s called the ‘sunk-cost fallacy’ for a reason– you can choose to take your losses of the past, stop gambling, and bet instead on yourself, your worth, your potential, on a better financial future. The cards depict two paths for you: one in which you reap what you sow in the present and continue to instantly gratify your way to devastation– or one in which you break the addiction, weather the pain of the immediate, and walk out of the tunnel into a brighter future for yourself. So…” The psychic sat up, his gold eyes locked unwavering with the client’s rapt gaze. “You stand at a crossroads, my friend; in which direction will your chariot race?”

With a soft smile, Cain bid the client farewell, closing the door to The Hourglass behind him with a click of the lock and twist of the 'OPEN' sign. Once hidden by the thick wood of the door, he shook his head with a sigh. Sometimes these readings were making him less a “psychic” and more a “life coach”.
 
They’d been the last customer of the day, a sad fellow. With everything Cain could read on the poor lad, stricken by incessant poverty of their own well-intentioned doing, he couldn’t in his right conscience charge them for the tarot reading. After all, he saw in them a mirror of himself, one hitting far closer to home than he was willing to admit.
 
That would have been the fifth psychic service he’d decided to work pro-bono that week already– and it was only Wednesday. Maybe he was growing soft, his hidden bleeding heart starting to claw its way into his rationale more and more. Regardless of the why, the bills– his debt– didn’t have the same bleeding heart for him. They’d need to be paid somehow and–

The faux psychic perked up, his thought interrupted by the sound of a knuckle tapping rhythmically against the window of his locked shop door. Who…? A man in a sharp suit stood on the other side, patiently waiting to be let in. 
 
Above the breast pocket sat the recognizable logo of TITAN.

"Present day" Thraelos; A small but well-known psychic. Resides in the city of Marrow where he keeps a small shop of magic wares, The Hourglass. Touts having a number of psychic skills and offers several psychic services (though it's all a ruse).

Contacted by the megacorporation TITAN for a hush-hush job offer: rid the century-abandoned Bifrost Terminal of its haunting; absurdly high payment. Needing the money, Cain accepts the job and travels via flight on the back of hired dragon, Kazuya, to the Bifrost Terminal to complete it, expecting it to be a case for a typical exorcism.

He discovers he is very very wrong. This is not a type of haunting he has ever seen before.

Well out of his league, he retreats back to Marrow, thanks to Kazuya retrieving him, and decides to subcontract additional help: anyone who feels equipped to assist, be it priests, psychics, paranormal investigators, mediums, ghost hunters, etc.

When he returns to the Bifrost Terminal and meets up with those that answered his call, they all become suddenly trapped within the facility by the most powerful ghost there, challenged now to free all of the spirits haunting the Bifrost Terminal in exchange for their freedom.

While it is not required to include Cain in your audition to BTOCT, keep in mind that he is diegetically also trapped there with your characters in the Terminal. It would create a plot hole to not mention him at all as if he didn't exist, but you are free and welcome to write a reason for him to not be there, effectively explaining away his not being included in the entry.

A shadowy figure that has appeared to both Cain and the Competitors. It seems to lead the other figures within the Bifrost Terminal-- or it has the most awareness. Either way, it stands out as the most powerful presence in all of The Bifrost Terminal.

Backstory


No one is sure if it's like the other souls in the Terminal or something else entirely. It speaks as though it is not the same, commanding the competitors to free the other souls, but never including itself in needing to also be freed by players.

Backstory


Born in 1828 Scotland of Earth, in a nowhere village that no longer exists. She was orphaned at an early age and left to fend for herself. Her parents had worked with tweed, so the village called her Tweedie. She has no memory of her given name.

 

Sin Eaters were popular at the time. Bread and beer were laid on a recently dead body to absorb the sin of the person. Another would then willingly eat the food, consuming the person's sin to allow them into Heaven. In doing so, the Sin Eater was condemning their soul. They were also given a small payment. Tweedie being a young child didn't understand this. She only saw a means to eat and ate well when a plague devastated hers and the surrounding villages.

 

Consuming so much sin from such a young age changed her. It extended her life and allowed her a few perks.

 

Tweedie became a Sin Eater for local lords, eventually shipping off to England. She was paid handsomely to consume the sins of church clergymen and other high-ranking officials. She has massive wealth but doesn't really do anything for herself with it. She'll anonymously drop huge amounts to local charities and random individuals who need a little extra help. Towns that she has lived in somehow have plenty of money to fix the infrastructure and help elevate poverty areas.

 

Locals of the town she currently lives, Mistfall, Main (1990s), have given her the title of town drunk. None of them know she owns the local bar and pays her workers far above-average salary, not even her workers. Or that she resides in the mansion just outside of town, where she keeps all the junk she's accumulated over the years. She's thought about opening her home up as a museum.

 

She drinks alcohol from bars as they continue to absorb sin from the patrons that are in close proximity.

Tweedie's blunt and truthful, but not outright. She'll deflect and twist her words, making you work for a straight answer. She won't ever explain her actions, no matter how strange they are. Mostly, she does things because she thinks it's funny and will do it all with a straight face. Leaving lawn gnomes in your yard. Dining at a high-class restaurant and loudly sipping wine out of the wrong glass. Keeping handfuls of zip ties on her person, just in case.

Tweedie tends to keep to herself, even when out in a crowd; she blends into the background. And that's the way she likes it. She likes to people-watch and learn about them from a distance. It makes anonymous gift-giving all the more amusing for her. However, there are times when she'll pick a person to 'pick on'. Often, it's people who are too serious and down on their luck. She'll find ways into their homes, buy things for herself, but leave it with them, oh you've got a cat? Let me leave this open bag of catnip on the floor. The more exasperated the person is at her antics, the more she'll do it. When the person no longer reacts accordingly to her shenanigans, she'll stop being such a menace to them. These are the people who can become the closest thing to a friend for her. If they've not filed for a restraining order by that point.

She doesn't like seeing people in poor situations, having grown up in awful conditions herself. She has the means to do something about it so she will. She just prefers no one knew it was her doing. She hates most people in positions of authority and is highly critical of them.

Tweedie wanders the halls of the Terminal in a state of confusion. She'll often find herself in the bar and lounge areas, or snooping around the kitchens. She knows something isn't right, but can't tell what. She has no memory of where she came from or why she's there. She can interact with those she comes across, but isn't sure if she's met them before.

The sin that Tweedie consumes builds in her body, stalling her natural death while she physically ages and saturates her color pigments. She can target an individual to unleash the sin upon, causing them to become ill with some sort of sickness. The more sin she lets out the more dangerous the illness is. When she releases sin she appears younger and healthier.

A former Jester turned Informant of Noble rank from the world of Umbrallah, Doruine is equal parts helpful and mischievous. Backstory


The son of a blacksmithing family, Doruine grew up a curious boy. Often asking questions of adventurers and others who would visit his fathers shop and getting to see his fair share of rare weaponry. Though not interested in a life outside of the city, he was a natural at talking to people.

 

Eventually, as he began to grow older and assist his father at the forge, he would add his own bit of flair to the proceedings, often drawing a crowd as he'd juggle and throw finished products to test and demonstrate the quality of their work.

 

Eventually, one of these performances caught the eye of a local noble, Henrietta Volundstruck. With a bit of convincing, and after seeing the quality of their work, along with the recommendations of her guard, the Notise family joined the Noble House of Volundstruck as their personal Blacksmiths, and Doru was given the role of personal Jester to the Elder Noblewoman, becoming sort of a son to her.

 

As such, when the Volundstruck family found themselves in the midst of a terrible scandal, involving Lord Rapheal Volundstruck, it was using his skills at disarming people and position as a fool that allowed Doruine to clear his Patrons name. Now a widow, Doruine offered to continue to act in this duel role for his Lady, an arrangement she accepted as, with the blessing of his birth family, was brought into House Volundstruck as a full member, acting as the Right Hand of Lady Volundstruck.

At his heart, Doruine is someone that seeks to make people laugh and forget their troubles. However, his time digging through the muck and mire of nobility and politics have hardened, making him a bit cynical to the untrained. Still, he strives to aid those, especially the elderly and those who can't help themselves even if just a bit.

Wordplay, juggling, and mischief are his weapons of choice when entertaining and gathering information, and he enjoys performing for the young and elderly especially. He takes great pride in his acts, but isn't afraid to have a laugh at himself and is always on the lookout for new gimmicks and contraptions to add to his routines.

Location


Doruine can typically be found in the Library of the Bifrost, or sometimes at the bar. He doesn't drink, but he enjoys the atmosphere. His awareness of the situation is on a sliding scale, but never complete and no where near as present as The Entity's.

Juggling, sleight of hand, and other acts of dexterity that involve his hands all fall into this skill. An expert at picking locks, misdirecting the eye to or away from his hands are all part of the craft he uses in his job.

Because of his status, Doruine is allowed to access Tier 2 Magic on his world. This extends to things such as personal barrier magic and utility magic, including creating small flames, chilling things he can touch, etc.

Befitting his occupation, Doruine is skilled at the art of lying and half-truthes, as well as figuring out information from others without them realizing. He uses this often in both his field work and as a performer.

A skilled swordsman, since taking on the role of Informant for his Lady. His Patron has spared no expense to make sure that Doruine can protect himself. He prefers curved blades, as well as small arms that he can conceal or throw.

Daggers: Doruine keeps a seemingly endless supply of daggers on his person. Typically as a part of any act he may be working on, they're also useful for when situations call for more direct means of actions.

Scimitar: A gift from his patron, it is emblazoned on the sheath and blade with the crest of the Volundstruck, and as such is a prize possession to him and an expertly crafted blade; his families of course.

Crossbow: Attached to his gauntlets, he's not the best shot, but he has it for utility and ranged purposes.

I really don't want to be here either, and as soon as I can get some reception the office is going to hear exactly what I think of their "just a quick check-in" along with my immediate resignation."

Simon is clearly out of his depth. As an Asset and Contractor Relations Liaison, much of Simon's life revolved around his job with TITAN and sending mail in every digital, magical, and physical form between their corporate office and their contractors- like Cain. On his first (and last) field assignment, Simon was sent to investigate Cain's decision to drastically subcontract his work to unauthorized parties. Unfortunately, his inexperience and TITAN's willingness to overlook employee well-being has led him into an interesting position he is not yet aware of.

Backstory


Simon Martin-Edwards is a native to Marrow, the capital city of Fulguria where he grew up with an even balance of magic and technology present, especially driven by TITAN's ongoing study into both and the combinations thereof. Despite having high aspirations to become a magic engineer in TITAN's research and development department, Simon has never been gifted in the practice of magic needed to make it in that field. Instead he settled for a comfortable (until now) position at a desk job, facilitating correspondence with TITAN's various contractors and assets. He has been stuck in the same position with TITAN since graduating from the University of Marrow. He was never exceptional in looks or personality and only slightly more competent than any given person at his job, leading to him being frequently passed over for promotions or special assignments, until this time.

 

In an attempt to climb the corporate ladder, Simon volunteered to be assigned to Cain as his contact at TITAN and offer him the job of exorcising the Terminal, having already met him at his shop in Marrow. Unfortunately that later led Simon to being assigned this in-person task to travel to the Bifrost Terminal ahead of the stated entry time and confront Cain about the open invitation he extended to unauthorized parties to enter the Terminal.

 

Without the worldly knowledge of safe hiking practices or the ability to convince anyone to escort him to the Terminal, Simon underwent the trip to the peak early one morning while the sun was still up and the weather seemed at least passable. At some point during his expedition he recalls the weather turning very quickly for the worse. He managed to stumble in and out of consciousness until he simply found himself inside the lobby of the Terminal with his winter coat missing. He isn't sure how he arrived or if something or someone helped get him here.

Simon is not in the habit of hiding things so much as he is being overlooked. He was never an exceptional person in any way, and he's spent most of his life managing to coast by on his work ethic.

Now that he is trapped inside The Terminal, Simon is best described as skittish, nervous, and completely uncomfortable. He is well aware that he lacks any of the talent, skills, or equipment the others arrived with to be able to deal with these circumstances, and any loyalty he had for his employers is well and truly gone. He is willing to cooperate fully with the expedition team and do anything necessary to get himself out of this situation, even if it means going even deeper into this gods-forsaken metal coffin.

Simon will comply with anything the expedition team asks of him, as he understands they're his best chance of survival, and he's willing to sell out any of the low-level corporate knowledge he has about the terminal to help them. He's prone to staying in the middle of the pack with more skilled combatants on as many sides as he can manage. However, he is specifically appalled that there are not one, but several children present in the expedition, and he is willing to put himself in danger to protect them, even if they're demonstrably more capable of defending themselves than he is.

Simon is found hiding under a table in one of the first few rooms that branches off of the lobby, hiding from one of the terminal's entities, whether it is still in the room or not.

Job


Simon is an employee for TITAN in their administrative division. He volunteered to be appointed as Cain's contact with TITAN and was the representative to offer Cain the contract to exorcise the Bifrost Terminal initially. He was later sent to cut off Cain's expedition into the Terminal after TITAN caught wind of Cain's open invitation for unauthorized contractors to enter the Terminal with him en masse. Unfortunately after arriving early he was scared deeper into the terminal before he could actually keep anyone from entering.

The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing


This section is intended for a slow reveal. Consider pacing before using this section or any later attributes marked blue.
MAJOR SPOILERS, HANDLE WITH CARE

Simon did not survive his trek up the mountain, at least not entirely. He was too unprepared, and somewhere on the mountain is his heavy winter coat, abandoned after something Other found him freezing to death. Simon is not aware of this fact and continues to move somehow, unaware of his lack of any body heat despite constantly shivering from the cold.

Kazimir (He/They/It) is a spirit native to Panthea, the tallest and most unforgiving of mountains on this continent. He is a spirit of the freezing cold that claims the lives of all things that come unprepared to ward him off, as natural as the wind and snow on the mountain itself. While he can often be seen as malevolent or even evil, he cares only for the continuation of himself and his station and is not concerned with mortal morality. Kazimir manifests visually and in any psychic probing as a large white wolf with piercing blue eyes a floppy ushanka Winter hat, a somewhat old-timey affectation native to Origa. When he speaks it is short and dispassionately with a very old native accent of this area, most commonly approximated as Russian. Natives might recognize him as a frequent feature of local bedtime stories about the dangers of going out at night or not wearing your coat.

Kazimir has his own goal in the Terminal. As a spirit older than the Terminal, possibly older than Origa, he was here, unseen, when it was being built, nipping at the heels of construction workers and pacing the edges of camp fires to watch for the overconfident and drunk to wander into his domain. During the short week that the Terminal was operational he felt something inside, a doorway to a world frozen over completely where summer and sun would never shrink his domain to the peak of a mountain and every living thing teetered at the edge of his jaws at all times. Unfortunately the building was kept too warm and comfortable for the attendant beings for him to be able to enter it. Hardly a week later the door was closed and his hope of reaching that wonderland was cut off again. Now with the possibility of the gates being reopened, he has taken his chance to reach it once more.

Kazimir as a spirit of Death by Freezing found Simon at that critical point at the very edge of doing so. But seeing a familiar symbol on his coat, the wolf became suddenly more interested in what Simon could do for him while not completely dead. Currently Kazimir is possessing Simon, living in his frozen body like a suit of armour and keeping him at the very edge of freezing to death and unaware of the wolf's presence. Just as a death by freezing was his to claim, it was his to withhold, after all. Kazimir is currently happy to stay in the background of Simon's body, letting him stay under the radar until his goals are met and he can escape to that frozen world. If Simon becomes under true physical threat, Kazimir can take control, completely shifting Simon's body language and voice as well as freezing his hair into a white permafrost. Simon's mind is rendered unconscious during these periods and he does not experience anything Kazimir does while he is in control.

They can be separated with the right skills, and any exorcist here would find it even easy to do. However, Kazimir would be quick to remind anyone making the attempt that they'd be killing Simon to do so, as the spirit is the only thing keeping him from truly dying. It will take more tact for Simon to leave the Terminal truly alive.

Abilities


✦ Magi-Tech Implant

A small green crystal on Simon's left temple is an outward indication of a deeper Magi-Tech creation that is bound to much of his brain and nervous system to allow him to interface with TITAN technology and perform administrative tasks at any location.

Comparable in power to a contemporary smart phone, Simon is able to give motion and voice commands to his implant to perform various tasks including the storage and retrieval of information, communication with compatible technology, and even saving things he can see and hear using his eyes and ears as a sort of recording device. Normally it would allow him access to TITAN systems and archives, but having been cut off from those it will be largely nonfunctional.

✦ Projection Stations

Normally Simon's interactions with his implant involve him waving his hands around in complex motions that only he can see the results of. At certain points in the Bifrost Terminal once the power has been restored, Simon will have access to Caster terminals which will allow him to produce illusory projections of his interface, images, videos, sounds, etc. This doesn't happen at the speed and complexity of true illusion magic so much as a somewhat tech capable person with a projector and presentation software.

Tagging In

Spoilers

Kazimir, the Winter Wolf can take over Simon's body, making him effectively immune to pain (but not injury) besides heat and fire related attacks. He also becomes much more physically strong and agile, often picking up nearby objects like chairs and fire axes as weapons. He will attempt to end any confrontation with a physical threat by biting a vital area and draining all heat from his victim's body before disengaging and turning control back over to Simon.

Backstory


Goose is a proud knight of a neighboring kingdom from a long and distinguished line of knights. He takes the ideas of duty and service very very seriously and commits himself to the betterment of the kingdom with everything he has.

Stern, serious, very dry and a little stiff. He gets embarrassed easily, which delights his wife. Defers to his wife Crane to handle most social situations. He takes on most logistical tasks in their relationship. Goose seems happiest when 'being useful'. He gets anxious when at rest for a little too long. How lucky then that his wife loves having things done for her. Otherwise, Goose loves a good challenge and improving the situations of the people around him. He's generous with everything he has.

Goose is second in command to his Captain, and will soon take over for him once the current Captain retires. As such, he in in charge of overseeing the general wellbeing of the knights under him, as well as keeping order and contact with the Nobility above him. He is often send out on diplomatic missions as guard to nobles, or as a simple check on far flung posts. He loves his job.

Backstory


Crane is a dragon that was raised in the castle of a neighboring kingdom. She much prefers this human form, and fell in love while she worked there as an assassin. Seeing as she's happy to retire and let life happen at her and her darling husband Goose, she's just following where he goes. 

 

She is a carefree spirit with a nigh unending zest for life. Just happy to be here really, but this causes her idea of 'alarming' to be a little warped. Oftentimes she's just slightly too casual about danger and harm to herself. This attitude is supported (unfortunately) by her sheer skill in all things survival. Less wildlife expert and more general willingness to play dirty and get the outcome that suits her best. Goose is most of her moral compass. She has an adult son who follows in her career path.

Crane has long since lost the ability to be without Goose for extended periods of time. Her lifelong fight with currently unnamed mood disorder has left her slightly unable to cope with prolonged bouts of loneliness. This is barely an issue in day-to-day, since she is retired and Goose is rarely gone for long.

Personality


Typically one to keep to himself, Kazuya interacts with others usually begrudgingly. He might have a low tolerance for socializing but he’s… cordial enough. Often his bluntness causes him to come off as rude without really meaning to, but primarily he’s just kind of awkward when made to interact for extended periods.

 

Though far from being an open book he’ll still answer most questions when asked but tends to keep conversations short and to the point. The only person he seems content chatting with is Cain.

 

His trust and loyalty is difficult to earn but those who have earned it he is fiercely protective of. There are very few people he will help without question. First and foremost being his younger brother, Masaru, followed closely by Masaru’s wife and children, though Cain seems to slowly be making his way onto that list. He’d never admit it, but the charming psychic is starting to grow on him.

Rumours have it that Katabax was a living, breathing creature once, from a world very different to Thraelos. What species it may have been before, nobody can answer, nor do they dare ask. What stands before them in the present is all that matters: a complex arrangement of sliding metal parts and uncompromising mechanisms, all sharpened to needlepoint and polished to a perfect reflective finish.

 

Katabax locks himself often in his personal workspace within the laboratories of Azimuth Manufacturing Company, only being caught slithering through the halls in the peripheral vision of his underlings. Speculation breeds like wildfire as to what it could be up to, but very few have curried favour with the cruel machine.

Backstory


Arma'chymos is a world defined by its ever-dark skies and metallic flora and fauna. Many organisms in Arma'chymos are little more than the most basal of animals. It remains primitive in comparison to other worlds, stuck in its cycles by the overbearing pressures of heightened natural selection.

 

The creature that would eventually become Katabax was a small organism within Arma'chymos' brutal ecosystem first crawled out of their primordial soup as little more than a scavenger. From the beginning, its chemical receptors stood above the rest, being able detect tainted or poisonous chemicals in the remains it fed on. As it grew in size and speed, pre-Katabax began to select its diet, prioritizing creatures which learned tool manipulation and social species. Extracting more and more of their data, in conjunction with its own natural senses, granted it intelligence.

 

Pre-Katabax never claimed a part of its home world's surface as its territory despite its burgeoning intelligence providing an advantage. Instead, it holed itself in a tunnel near a pool of primordial soup and used it as its lair. It opted for a slippery, mobile body over heavy armour and specialized for precise dexterity over the obvious weapon in the form of claws. While the other apex creatures around it passively gained their own higher intelligence, Pre-Katabax was far ahead of them, experimenting and making observations of its greater environment. It had turned its gaze up to the skies too, wondering if there is anything beyond the grim skies.

 

Its answer would come in the form of a gateway. While it traced evidence of non-Chymic material buried deep in the data procured from its prey, another portal would periodically appear and disappear. Other creatures were afraid of it and no dominant individuals had claimed the immediate area. Katabax was determined to be the first to investigate.

 

The consequences were immediate. Katabax's body was rended apart in the space between Arma'chymos and its destination. On the other side, it emerged as a mangled mess of metal and flesh. Whoever were responsible shut the portal down and left Katabax in the chamber for months, where it proceeded to link itself to the computing system that operated the portal frame. The information it gained upon connecting to the system was immense, and finally, it had a name for the place it had ended up: Thraelos. From there, and with some assistance (and later material) from a particularly disturbed researcher, it restored as much as it could of its previous form.

 

Katabax has since been, strangely enough, accepted as another member of Azimuth Manufacturing Co.'s research staff, compelled to stay by the near limitless access to new information, and a particular agreement it had struck with the company's current Chief Director, Amira.

Katabax usually stays within the grounds of Azimuth's campus, having access to all the facilities freely there to the point that many suspect that it lives within the facility. On very rare occasions, it may go elsewhere for work-related reasons, whether it be as a representative of the company board or as the head of its own department—though it usually substitutes its presence with the use of a proxy, whether they be agents or drones.

✦ DIRECTIVE :: EXTRACT

Katabax is able to consume other organisms and extract chemical and electrical data from them to add to its information base. It is able to access memories of those it absorbs so long as the associated synapses are active. 

✦ SUB-DIRECTIVE :: SYNTHESIS

An ability intrinsic to its species, Katabax can take a piece of its own mass and synthesise a lesser copy of itself. The copy is much smaller and possesses little more than basic survival instincts. The copy is able to collect information independent of Katabax's main body. If at any point the main body is destroyed, the copy can gather the remaining mass and take its place if necessary. In turn, Katabax can re-absorb its clone(s) and the extra data that comes with it.

✦ PROTOCOL :: NULLIFY

Katabax has a field of anti-magic in an almost immediate proximity to it due to its composition. This field is subconsciously active by default, but can be disabled for a short period [ie. 1.5-3~ hrs].

Within this field, magic-wielders report their abilities feeling 'stuck' in some way or another. Objects imbued with arcane enhancement lose their [magic-based] effects so long as they in proximity. The moment the affected person or object crosses the boundary of the field in full, their capabilities return to them like normal, with no lingering side effects.

✦ Katabax's name is derived from the Ancient Greek word, 'katabasis' ( κατάβασις ), which refers to a journey into the Underworld in classical mythology. 
✦ I semi-ironically ship Zetsel with Bax purely because "Zetbax" (Setbacks!) is a hilarious ship name with the added context that these two idiots thrive on infuriating each other even if they are on the same team.
