Val Halmore [WIP]
-- Cultivatist Tenet
A young caller of spirits trying to prove himself so that he can come back home.
Table of ContentsBackstoryVal grew up in a small community called The Millet Field Cultivatist Village. He ended up getting kicked out 6 months ago due to constantly shirking spiritual responsibilities. Mainly neglecting to ever get a mentor and failing to ever perform a Fulfillment ritual. Now he lives in an apartment with a Cultivatist Kirkanewn by the name of Dean Grosnew, unable to move back till he does one of the two.
The world he comes from is filled with various creatures and monsters of various kinds but that biggest difference being that the afterlife and ghosts are a known thing. Specifically as a Ducoupian he grew up constantly around ghosts.
Where he grew up consisted of a few large shared houses where most of the days there are spent caring for each other and doing chores and nights for ritual and ceremonies. While Val had his gripes, mainly all the singing and repeatedly telling old legends and useless other traditions, he liked it there. It was much better than now where he has to work a job and manage money and everyone is so cold and mean.
But the reason he hasn't tried getting back yet is stubbornly thinking he can do better. A mentor would only hold him back and the exiled that volunteered were too boring. Hopefully the terminal would offer him a real challenge.

Personality
Val thinks he's smarter than most people. This isn't a point to protect his ego or to justify malice, he just takes it as a mater of fact. Actual he loves to meet people that he finds on his own level or above. But more often he finds himself disappointed. This results in him often not fully listening to other people and overestimating himself. Likes when people come to him to ask him for help and information. Will argue back if he's challenged but if he is proven wrong he'll apologize and back down (with some grumbling).
Now if he's actually that smart is debatable. What is known is that he retains information well, is quick to make connections, and is a decent problem solver. He's not as good at planning long term and his sheltered upbringing holds him back quite a bit.
He also doesn't like to feel like he is wasting his time and will cut corners if he doesn't understand the benefit as to why they are there.
Otherwise, he's quite a friendly and outgoing person. Deeply curious and caring about people. Always willing to give someone at least one chance and believes that anyone can become at least a kinda decent person if given the time and right support. If he's not with someone then he'll likely be quietly reading or on his phone.
Does have difficulty making deeper connections though. He also puts himself on a pedestal and with it intense pressure to prove himself.
Val is also a proud Cultivatist Ducorpian. He's not the one to try and convert people (Spirits though? Possibly.) but if asked about it he's quite willing to talk about what he believes. He wants to become the best version of himself quickly so he be the most help towards the community he cares so much about.

Ones That Passed
The edge a deep maroon with a black cover studded with rubies, each side displaying a bleached white skull engulfed in flame. Post-it notes ingrained between the pages. Red, yellow, green, blue.
There is a small book attacked to Val by a thin metal cord. This is not the "Ones That Passed". It is a symbol that Val can use to summon his copy of the training version of the "Ones That Passed", which is a large and ornately decorated book. Val's is covered in many different colored post-it notes. Despite it's size it's remarkably light and if one would take the time to flip though the pages they will come to find it hold many more than it should.
The "Ones That Passed" is a collection of the spirits of their respective community, if they want to be that is. Each page contains descriptions of the spirit from both themselves and people they've trusted and instructions on how to call them to their present location. Called spirits are different from exiled or wandering because they can interact with the world almost as good as they were when they were alive. Unfortunately this way of calling them isn't very stable and if they are not stabilized or dismissed in a few hours the person that called them can collapse.
When called, spirits can be asked for favors (or invited for some polite conversation :) ). The spirit can still deny whatever request given to that. They might not even respond to a call. Called spirits can also later call the person back for a favor (minus the teleportation). The living also can deny the favor but it's probably best not to leave too many favors unanswered.

Author's Notes
- Calling a Ducorpian a necromancer or something similar is seen as offensive.
- A body that should be dead but still animate (ie. zombie, skeleton) is an affront to The Vail and deeply disturbing.
I'm sorry there is so much world building nonsense. I'll explain it later
