Inquisitive, smart-mouthed, and mischievous, Kailios is an exorcist in-training from the declining nation of Zustan. Ever-curious about the world around him, he has a reputation back home for sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. As much as he wants to do right by his brother, his tendency to cause problems on purpose has gotten the two of them into trouble plenty of times before.
Table of ContentsBackstoryThe Arescotti siblings hail from a world called Alaia, after the world-goddess of the same name. It's a place where magic suffuses everything, spirits intermingle with humanity, and mortal life is all too often cruel, brutal, and short.
Born into desperate poverty, Kailios's early years were not ones he cares to remember. When he was only five, his mother ran off with a John to start a new life — one that didn’t include her children. She sold him and his brother for a pittance, and the siblings were quickly separated. For five years, Kailios found himself in the clutches of the Temple of the Unseen Eye. He learned two truths during that time: holy places breed the cruelest sorts of hypocrites, and scars could be more than skin-deep.
He’d nearly forgotten the shape of his brother’s face when Delim finally found him again. No longer the sullen child in threadbare clothes from Kailios’s memories, the man stood tall and proud, dressed in a finely tailored suit and bearing a fur-lined mantle on his shoulders. He told Kailios he’d been taken in by an exorcist who trained him in his craft and that he’d made a fortune taking on the most dangerous, highest-paying jobs. That he’d never stopped searching for Kailios.
Now, as an apprentice to the only family he has left, Kailios travels alongside his brother, learning the secrets of the exorcist's trade. Though the training can be harsh and the entities they face terrifying, Kailios is happy to be free of the Temple and to have his brother in his life again. Every new place they travel brings fresh experiences, new secrets to unravel, and new opportunities for Kailios to finally put his innate magical abilities to good use. |

Personality
Kailios is an energetic kid with an insatiable curiosity about the world. He loves learning new things (especially things he probably shouldn't), getting chances to show off what he knows, and talking to new people. However, his earnest desire to get to know people better can come off as nosy, especially to those who've just met him. He also likes playing pranks and teasing people. He doesn't mean anything bad by it, but he can sometimes take things a little too far, as kids his age are wont to do. If called out on it, however, he'll apologize, even if he might sulk a bit.
Kailios is troublingly cynical and guarded for a thirteen-year-old due to the abuse he suffered when he was younger. Getting him to actually trust someone new or open up about his own past is exceptionally difficult and requires a lot of patience.

Abilities
✦ Greenflame Strike
The only true offensive spell Kailios knows is a surprisingly devastating one that Delim taught him. If a situation grows dire enough, he may call a smokeless, viridescent fire to his hand that blisters the air and sickens those who spend too long in its presence. This conflagration can wrap around his weapon, set things in his immediate vicinity ablaze, or be lobbed as a projectile to punish those foolish enough to think distance offers defense against this caustic flame.
Kailios isn't aware, but this flame is highly radioactive, and anyone other than the caster will take magic radiation damage if they're within around five feet of it or any fires started by it. This isn't as deadly or severe as real radiation sickness; it's more like getting a full-body sunburn that can progress to a real burn if you stay within the effect radius for too long.
✦ Spirit Sensing Measure
As an exorcist in training, Kailios is able to perceive the presence of spirits and other immaterial entities. This is not so much spirit sight as it is a pervasive sense or proximity radar. He perceives spirits as a hushed voice whispering secrets. The more a spirit wishes to not be discovered, the louder these whispers become, as if the very desire of the spirit not to be seen announces them to the young exorcist.
✦ Exorcist's Blade: Invocation of Lead
Every exorcist is taught as part of their training that lead bears a secret virtue that is anathema to those things that linger in the spirit world. With an invocation of a nameless god of lead, Kailios can enhance the latent power of a lead blade with might enough to strike a spirit and wound it.
Skills & Stats
The Arescotti brothers are god-blooded; a catch-all term for those descended from gods or demons. Mortals from Alaia are typically very limited in terms of the kind of magic they’re capable of, but the god-blooded often have a personal well of mana they can pull from, allowing them access to greater feats of magic. Neither are sure of exactly what type of spirit was in their lineage, but it likely had something to do with fire, as neither brother can succumb to the effects of extreme heat or cold, be it hypothermia or hyperthermia, though they still run a risk of frostbite to their extremities if they don't dress appropriately for cold weather. In addition, both brothers are fireproof, though they can be harmed by the effects of being caught in a conflagration (smoke inhalation, building collapse, etc.), and can be harmed by fire from magical sources. The last odd trait they inherited is one they don't strictly know about; save for their teeth, their bones are made of brass. This makes it nearly impossible for them to break a bone, makes any strike they throw hit harder, and makes them considerably heavier than they should be for their sizes.
Kailios doesn't have too much in the way of magic, still being only a trainee. What he does have is a photographic memory and a keen eye. He's incredibly observant, almost to the point of paranoia. Physically, he's about as strong as you'd expect a weedy thirteen year-old to be, barring the extra power his brass bones pack into his punches. Outside of his magic, his main means of defense is his skill with a knife. He's quite good with it, much better than any child his age has a right to be.
